Greece, Dec 01 (V7N)- Farmers across Greece have erupted in anger over delays in receiving agricultural subsidies from the European Union. Hundreds of farmers took to the streets on Sunday (November 30), blocking major roads with their tractors, Qatar-based media outlet Al Jazeera reported.
Protesters alleged that nearly 600 million euros in EU funding has been delayed due to an ongoing corruption investigation involving Greece. They accused the government of failing to ensure timely disbursement of the subsidies.
Tensions escalated when police intervened. A fierce clash broke out between farmers and law enforcement, leading to arrests and baton charges. Greek police also fired tear gas to disperse the crowd.
Recently, the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) accused Greece of embezzling EU funds, prompting an official investigation. As a result, EU subsidies remain suspended until the probe is completed.
