Washington, Nov 30 (V7N) — Amid growing tensions over a recent US operation in the Caribbean, US President Donald Trump held a telephone conversation with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro last week, senior US officials told The New York Times.
According to the report, both leaders discussed the possibility of arranging a bilateral meeting. While both sides have reportedly expressed agreement in principle, no date or venue has yet been finalized.
Tensions between Washington and Caracas escalated further on Saturday (November 29), after President Trump ordered a complete closure of US-controlled airspace over Venezuela and neighboring regions. He issued a public warning urging airlines, pilots, and drug- and human-trafficking groups to avoid the restricted airspace.
US sources say the move is aimed at increasing diplomatic and operational pressure on the Maduro administration, which Washington accuses of facilitating illicit trafficking and undermining regional security.
Venezuelan officials have not yet issued a formal response regarding the latest US airspace restrictions.
