Dublin, Oct 25 (V7N) — Left-wing independent candidate Catherine Connolly has secured an overwhelming victory in Ireland’s presidential election, winning 63 percent of the vote and defeating her closest rival, Heather Humphreys.
Voting took place across 43 constituencies on Friday (October 24), with the results officially announced after counting concluded on Saturday. Connolly, 68, received strong backing from a coalition of left-wing opposition parties.
In her inaugural speech at Dublin Castle, Connolly pledged to “listen to the people and work for them”, emphasizing unity and social justice as the key themes of her presidency.
A former lawyer and long-time parliamentarian, Catherine Connolly becomes the third female president in Ireland’s history, marking another milestone in the country’s progressive political journey.
