Yangon, Oct 18 (V7N) — Myanmar is scheduled to hold national elections in December 2025, despite widespread criticism that the polls will lack credibility under the current military regime. The country has remained under military rule since the coup of 2021, which ousted the elected civilian government of Aung San Suu Kyi.

According to a Reuters report, the European Union (EU) has no plans to send election observers to Myanmar for the upcoming vote.

EU Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Kasja Olonggren said the likelihood of the elections producing credible or democratic results is “very low.” She also confirmed that Myanmar’s ruling authorities have not invited international observers to monitor the polls.

Olonggren further described the planned election as a “military-backed process”, suggesting it is designed to legitimize the junta’s grip on power rather than restore democracy.
