Kabul, Sep 01 (V7N) – A powerful earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan on Sunday night (August 31), killing more than 500 people and injuring over 1,000, according to the country’s Information Ministry.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake struck at 11:17 p.m. local time (GMT), with its epicenter located 27 kilometers east-northeast of Jalalabad. The quake had a magnitude of 6.0 on the Richter scale and a shallow depth of 8 kilometers, intensifying its impact.
Casualties have been reported in the Nur Gal, Sawki, Watpur, Manogi, and Chapa Dara districts of Kunar province. Authorities warned that the death toll could rise further, as many remote areas remain inaccessible and rescue operations are ongoing.
Locals described the earthquake as one of the most powerful in recent memory. Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesman for the acting Afghan administration, said on social media X (formerly Twitter), “Unfortunately, tonight's earthquake has caused loss of life and extensive damage in several of our eastern provinces.”
He added that local administrations and residents were engaged in rescue operations, with aid teams from central and neighboring provinces en route to the affected areas.
The USGS reported at least two strong aftershocks, one measuring magnitude 5.2, further complicating rescue efforts.
The tremors were felt in Kabul, about 200 kilometers from the epicenter, and even in Islamabad, Pakistan, approximately 400 kilometers away.
