Riedlingen, July 28 (V7N) – At least three people were killed and more than 50 others injured when a passenger train derailed in the southwestern German city of Riedlingen on Sunday, local time.
According to local police, two carriages of the train came off the tracks while carrying around 100 passengers. Emergency services responded swiftly, with over 100 rescue workers deployed to the scene.
Fifty injured passengers were transported to nearby hospitals, with several reportedly in critical condition.
The exact cause of the derailment is still under investigation. However, authorities suspect that river erosion caused by recent heavy rainfall may have compromised the stability of the tracks, leading to the accident.
Rescue operations continued into the night as investigators worked to determine the full extent of the damage and identify any structural concerns on surrounding rail lines.
