Brasilia, Aug 05 (V7N) – The Supreme Court of Brazil ordered former President Jair Bolsonaro under house arrest on Monday, citing violations of a ban on social media use. The ruling was issued by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who also confiscated Bolsonaro's passport and prohibited him from leaving the capital, Brasilia.
The court accuses Bolsonaro and his associates of attempting to undermine democracy, spreading false information about elections, and receiving backing from military forces.
Previously, Bolsonaro was subjected to movement monitoring for obstruction of justice. The court also mandated electric shocks on his legs as a precautionary measure. Additionally, Bolsonaro has been barred from social media use and faces restrictions on speech promotion activities.
Bolsonaro is currently on trial for conspiring to retain power after losing the 2022 presidential election. Since leaving office in January 2023, he has been investigated for various allegations involving corruption and abuse of power.
Bolsonaro maintains that these legal cases are politically motivated and aimed at creating insecurity among his supporters.
Following his electoral defeat, supporters of Bolsonaro stormed government buildings in Brasilia, an event widely regarded as a serious threat to Brazilian democracy. Since then, efforts have intensified to hold Bolsonaro accountable.
The verdict in this high-profile case is expected to significantly influence Brazil’s political landscape, particularly the future of right-wing leadership in the country.
