Karachi, Apr 21 (V7N) — The Pakistan Cricket Board has imposed a one-year ban on Sri Lanka’s T20 captain Dasun Shanaka for breaching his contract to participate in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Contract violation
In an official statement issued in Karachi, the PCB said Shanaka was contracted to play for Lahore Qalandars in the ongoing Pakistan Super League season.
However, despite the agreement, he joined Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League, prompting disciplinary action.
Ban implications
As a result of the sanction, Shanaka will be ineligible to participate in the 2027 PSL season.
Player response
Shanaka expressed regret over his decision, apologizing to fans and stakeholders in Pakistan. He described the PSL as a prestigious tournament and said he hopes to return in the future.
Similar precedent
The PCB also referenced a previous case involving Blessing Muzarabani, who received a two-year ban for leaving Islamabad United to join Kolkata Knight Riders as a replacement for Mustafizur Rahman.
The board emphasized that contractual commitments must be respected to maintain the integrity of the league.
