Dhaka, Dec 18 (V7N) — Unlike previous editions, the 2026 Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) will not feature a formal opening ceremony, the tournament’s Governing Council announced on Wednesday.

In earlier seasons, the BPL opened with grand ceremonies, featuring high-profile performances by renowned regional artists, including legendary singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, at significant cost. However, the upcoming edition will mark a departure from that tradition.

In a statement, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) said the decision was taken in line with the current directives of the Bangladesh government regarding large public gatherings and with the aim of ensuring maximum safety for all concerned. As a result, the BPL Governing Council has decided not to organize any pre-event programs or opening ceremonies involving mass gatherings.

Sources indicate that the timing of the tournament was also a factor in the decision. BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman is scheduled to return to the country on December 25, and the BCB is unwilling to take risks associated with organizing a large-scale event at the same time. Compliance with government instructions has also been emphasized.

The 2026 Bangladesh Premier League is set to begin on December 26 in Sylhet.
