Thakurgaon, Jan 09 (V7N)- BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that university student parliament elections will not have any impact on the upcoming national elections. He also expressed dissatisfaction over the country’s law and order situation ahead of the polls.
He made the remarks while speaking to reporters at his Kalibari residence in Thakurgaon on Friday.
Mirza Fakhrul said that for the last 17 years, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal has not been allowed to carry out normal organizational activities in universities. He added that the people of the country are eagerly waiting for elections but the prevailing security situation remains a major concern.
“I am not satisfied with the law and order situation. Political leaders are being killed at an alarming rate, and many of our party leaders have also lost their lives. We have strongly condemned these incidents and expressed condolences, but no effective action has been taken so far,” he said.
The BNP Secretary General urged the government to act more responsibly to prevent further violence ahead of the elections.
Regarding the referendum, Mirza Fakhrul said BNP had long demanded that the national election and referendum be held on the same day, which has now been implemented. He added that the reforms included in the referendum align with BNP’s 31-point reform agenda, rejecting any notion that BNP opposes the reform process.
On personal security, he said, “I am not wearing a bulletproof jacket for my own safety. However, given the recent attacks on political leaders, many may feel compelled to take such precautions.”
Mirza Fakhrul also highlighted the importance of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman’s upcoming visit to North Bengal, saying it would inspire party leaders and activists in the region.
“If BNP forms the government in the future, backward regions like North Bengal will receive greater priority,” he said.
He noted that Tarique Rahman’s visit is a personal one, during which he will visit the graves of July uprising martyr Abu Sayeed and other martyrs, and participate in a mass prayer mahfil for late national leader Begum Khaleda Zia.
District BNP President Mirza Faisal Amin, General Secretary Poygam Ali, Municipal BNP President Shariful Islam Sharif, Sadar Upazila BNP General Secretary Mahbubur Rahman Tuhin, and other party leaders were also present.
