Dhaka, Sep 15 (V7N) – National Citizens Party (NCP) member secretary Akhtar Hossain has emphasized the need for a new constitution that ensures balance of power and protects citizens’ rights, urging that the July Charter be given a legal basis rather than remaining a verbal pledge.

He made the remarks while speaking at a seminar titled “How We Want a Constitution to Establish Democracy in Bangladesh”, organized by Jubo Shakti at Banglamotor in the capital on Monday evening.

Akhtar Hossain said that the current constitution cannot establish true democracy in the country, calling on all political parties to reach a consensus on a new framework.

Speaking at the same event, the party’s joint convener Javed Rasin said that while the NCP does not intend to join alliances or run a simultaneous movement with the Proportional Representation (PR) demand, it strongly supports the introduction of PR in the upper house.

Akhtar Hossain further added that adopting the PR system in the upper house would help establish a multi-party democratic system in Bangladesh.
