Dhaka, Aug 06 (V7N) – The People's Rights Council (Gono Odhikar Parishad) has welcomed the announcement of the national election in February, while also expressing dissatisfaction over the content of the July Declaration. The party has called for reform of the declaration and legal recognition of the July Charter.
At a press conference held on Wednesday (August 6) in Purana Paltan, party president Nurul Haque Nur said that while the People's Rights Council views the election announcement as a positive step, it believes that several crucial issues remain unaddressed in the July Declaration.
Nur criticized the omission of the 2018 quota reform movement and the Safe Road Movement from the document, calling the declaration a "fabricated history" of the 2024 mass uprising. He lamented that even after a year, the number of martyrs from the movement could not be confirmed and alleged that the government failed to present an accurate account of events to the nation.
“The People's Rights Council demands a reformed July Declaration through inclusive discussions,” said Nur, also stressing that the July Charter must be given legal status. He called for the upcoming parliamentary election to be held on the basis of this reformed framework.
Nur concluded by welcoming the election date, stating, “We see the February election announcement positively. While we prefer elections before February, we have no objection if they are held in December or January.” However, he raised concerns about the impartiality of the current administration, casting doubt on the fairness of the electoral environment under its supervision.
