Dhaka, Aug 06 (V7N) – The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has officially welcomed the July Declaration and expressed support for the announcement of national elections in February 2026, calling it a significant step toward resolving the country’s long-standing political crisis.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made the statement during a press conference held at the party’s central office in Nayapaltan on Wednesday (August 6) morning.
“BNP welcomes the July Declaration announced by the Chief Advisor on August 5,” Fakhrul said. “We believe that this declaration marks the beginning of a transformative journey toward a new democratic Bangladesh. It offers hope for building a progressive and prosperous nation rooted in equality, human values, and justice.”
Historic Agreement on Election Timing
Addressing the upcoming elections, Mirza Fakhrul welcomed the joint announcement made in London by BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, confirming that the next general elections will be held in February 2026—before the holy month of Ramadan.
He termed the election schedule a "historic announcement" and stated that it would help break the existing political deadlock and pave the way for a democratic transition.
Call for Fair and Inclusive Elections
Fakhrul further stated, “BNP hopes that both the government and the Election Commission will take all necessary measures to ensure that the upcoming election is free, fair, impartial, and acceptable to all stakeholders.”
He concluded by urging all political parties and the people of Bangladesh to work collectively to ensure the success of the election, institutionalize democracy, and form an effective national parliament capable of delivering on the hopes and aspirations of the citizens.
