Dhaka, June 27 (V7N) — Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Joint Secretary General and Media Cell Convener Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie has revealed that Tarique Rahman, the party’s Acting Chairman, is expected to return to Bangladesh “very soon.” Speaking at a press event in Dhaka, Annie confirmed that preparations for his return are actively underway both in London and at home, with the party gearing up for a formal reception.

Speaking at the “Meet the Reporters” program at Dhaka Reporters Unity on Thursday, Annie addressed several issues in response to journalists’ questions.

Highlighting BNP’s commitment to fighting corruption, Annie said the party will adopt a “zero tolerance” policy if it comes to power. “Corruption and misgovernance have destroyed the social structure. To recover from this, corruption must be eradicated,” he said.

He emphasized that BNP has already started working toward this goal as outlined in the party’s 31-point reform agenda. “This will be a major challenge, but we are ready for it. We will take tough measures not only within the administration but also outside of it to ensure corruption is kept in check.”

On foreign policy, Annie said BNP will revive the spirit of regional cooperation established by party founder Ziaur Rahman, who played a key role in forming SAARC. He accused the current Awami League government of rendering the organization ineffective by prioritizing one neighboring country (India).

“When BNP is in power, SAARC will be reactivated to strengthen regional ties. A new dimension will be added to foreign relations,” Annie said, adding that BNP’s diplomatic motto would be: “We will have friends, not masters.”

He further explained that BNP will formulate separate foreign policies tailored for major international actors, including China, the United States, the United Kingdom, and neighboring countries.

The “Meet the Reporters” event was also attended by DRU President Abu Saleh Akon, General Secretary Mainul Hasan Sohel, Vice President Gazi Anwar, Joint Secretary Nadia Sharmin, and Executive Member Junaed Hossain (Shishir).
