Dhaka, May 01 (V7N) – On the eve of International Workers' Day, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman extended his greetings to all working people at home and abroad, paying tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for labor rights at Chicago’s Hay Market in 1886.
In a message sent to the media on Wednesday, he described May Day as a symbol of unity and struggle for global labor rights and recalled that BNP founder Shaheed Ziaur Rahman had always identified himself with the working class, initiating various landmark labor welfare programs during his tenure.
Tarique highlighted the BNP's past initiatives, including labor law reforms, salary commissions, minimum wages for garment workers, bonuses, and education and healthcare programs for workers’ children. He credited Shaheed Zia for laying the foundation of Bangladesh’s booming garment industry.
Addressing the present situation, he said that despite sacrifices in past movements, workers remain neglected and burdened by inflation and high living costs. He stressed that only through a democratic and just social system can the dignity of workers be truly secured.
He concluded by calling for renewed commitment to labor rights globally and wished success for all May Day programs.
