Chattogram, Oct 16 (V7N) – The Chattogram University (CU) student union elections concluded with a decisive victory for the Chhatra Shibir-backed “Sampriti Students’ Alliance” panel. The panel secured 24 out of 26 central positions, including Vice President (VP) and General Secretary (GS). The remaining two positions were won by Ayubur Rahman Taufiq of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (AGS) and independent candidate Tamanna Mahbub Preeti (Co-Playground).
The results were announced unofficially early Thursday morning around 4:30 AM by CU Chief Election Commissioner Professor Monir Uddin, covering 14 halls and one hostel. According to the tally, Ibrahim Hossain Roni won the VP post with 7,221 votes, while Saeed Bin Habib received 7,295 votes for the GS position. Ayubur Rahman Taufiq secured 6,441 votes for the AGS post.
Vote counting began at 6:40 PM on Wednesday across multiple faculties, including Social Sciences, Business and Administration, Shaheed Hridoy Tarua (New Arts), Engineering, and Science faculties. Voting itself commenced at 9:00 AM across 15 centers in five faculty buildings and continued until 4:00 PM.
This year’s elections were historic, as CU had not held elections since 1990. A total of 27,516 students were eligible to vote, including 11,156 female voters. A total of 908 candidates contested various positions, with 415 vying for 26 central posts and 493 contesting 14 halls and one hostel. In central posts, 24 candidates competed for the VP, 22 for GS, and 22 for Assistant General Secretary positions.
For hall-level positions, 14 posts were available in each hall, making a total of 210 posts across 14 halls and one hostel. Female students contested 70 posts in five residential halls with 123 candidates, while 16 posts had a single candidate and 53 posts required voting.
Thirteen panels contested the elections, including Chhatra Dal, Chhatra Shibir-backed “Sampriti Students’ Alliance,” leftist student organizations, a coalition of ten social and cultural organizations called “Diversity Alliance” (with no candidates for three posts), the joint panel “Droh Parishad” comprising Chhatra Union and Socialist Student Front (with nine posts uncontested), and the panel “Binirmana Shikkharthi Oikko” representing students from the July movement and Student Federation. The main contest was observed among these panels, with the Chhatra Shibir-supported alliance dominating the central posts.
The election outcome highlights the enduring influence of Chhatra Shibir at Chattogram University and marks a significant milestone in restoring student governance after more than three decades.
