Teknaf, Jan 11 (V7N) — Fishermen operating along the Maheshkhali Para coast in Teknaf Sadar Union have caught at least 106 maunds of fish of various species, generating sales of around Tk 900,000 and bringing a wave of relief and happiness to local fishing communities.
The catch was made at around 5:30 pm on Saturday (January 10) from a drag net owned by Maulvi Hafez Ahmed, a resident of the Godarbil area. The net was cast near the Marine Drive–adjacent beach in Teknaf Sadar Union.
On-site observations showed that the haul mainly included faysa fish and both small and large ribbonfish. The fish were brought ashore and immediately sold to wholesale buyers. While a portion of the catch was supplied to local markets, a significant share was transported to drying yards for dried fish production.
The large haul has benefited not only the net owner but also fishermen, boat crew members, and workers involved in fish processing, positively impacting livelihoods across the coastal area.
Boat skipper Md. Islam said that good-quality fish had been scarce in recent weeks, making the latest catch especially encouraging. He added that fish worth nearly Tk 900,000 were landed in a single haul, leaving everyone involved satisfied.
Net owner Maulvi Hafez Ahmed attributed the sudden increase in fish availability to favorable weather conditions, saying that more than 106 maunds of fish were caught in just one net.
Shahidul Islam, a representative of the Teknaf Upazila Fisheries Office, said that most of the catch consisted of ribbonfish, which are widely used for dried fish production in the Teknaf region. He also noted that ribbonfish breeding increases during the winter season, contributing to higher catches at this time of year.
