Dhaka, Dec 27 (V7N)- Ferry services on the Paturia–Daulatdia and Aricha–Kazirhat waterways have resumed after being suspended for about 15 hours due to dense fog. Operations restarted on Saturday night as visibility improved around 10:00 pm, authorities said.
Earlier, the ghat authorities suspended ferry movement from 7:30 pm on Friday after thick fog enveloped the Padma–Jamuna river basin. According to the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC), the fog gradually intensified in the evening, significantly reducing visibility along the river and its banks.
At one stage, navigation became too risky, prompting authorities to halt ferry operations to prevent accidents. As a result, five ferries remained stranded mid-river, unable to reach either shore.
Meanwhile, ferry and boat services on the Chandpur–Shariatpur waterway have also resumed after being closed for about eight hours. Ferry operations on this route were suspended from 10:00 pm on Friday due to dense fog.
BIWTC officials said that as the fog thickened, directional marking lights on the waterways became unclear, making navigation hazardous. Once the fog subsided and visibility improved in the morning, ferry services were gradually restored.
Authorities advised passengers and vehicle operators to remain cautious during winter nights and early mornings, as fog-related disruptions may continue in the coming days.
