Pabna, August 14 (V7N) — After an eight-hour suspension of all transport services, the Pabna District Motor Workers' Union called off their strike on Wednesday afternoon following assurances from the district administration regarding legal action against those involved in a clash with transport workers.
Firoz Khan, Convener of the Pabna District Motor Workers' Union, confirmed the withdrawal and said, “Transport operations resumed on all routes from 2 PM after we received assurances from the administration.”
The strike was launched earlier in the day at 6 AM, disrupting all routes including Pabna to Dhaka and other key destinations. The move was in protest of an alleged assault on “My Line” private bus workers by BRTC (Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation) staff in Baneshwar, Rajshahi, on Tuesday over a passenger pick-up dispute.
According to Khan, tensions escalated after BRTC workers allegedly assaulted My Line staff again during a mediation meeting held in Pabna later that evening. In response, the union declared a complete strike from Wednesday morning, demanding the immediate arrest of those involved.
The situation began to resolve when a meeting was held around 12:30 PM on Wednesday at the Pabna Deputy Commissioner’s office. The meeting included DC Mofizul Islam, senior transport union leaders, and the Officer-in-Charge of Sadar Police Station.
At the meeting, the Deputy Commissioner assured the union that action would be taken and those responsible for the assault would be arrested. Considering the hardship faced by regular commuters, the union decided to withdraw the strike and resume services.
The brief disruption caused significant trouble for passengers, many of whom had to rely on alternative means to reach their destinations.
