MONGLA, June 28 (V7N) – The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Mongla Municipality Ward No. 6 has successfully concluded its biennial council, electing a new leadership team after a previous attempt was marred by chaos. Md. Kamrul Islam was elected President, Md. Jamal Hossain secured the General Secretary position, and Md. Jamal Sikder became the Organizing Secretary.
The council, held on Saturday, saw a robust democratic exercise with voting commencing at 9 AM and continuing until 2 PM. A significant turnout of 184 voters participated out of 194 eligible members, demonstrating strong engagement. The elections were contested by two candidates for the presidency, three for the general secretary role, and four for the organizing secretary position.
This successful council marks a critical step for the BNP in the ward, especially as a previous attempt to hold the council on February 22 was abruptly canceled due to an incident involving the "looting of ballot boxes." The completion of this council session signals the party's renewed efforts to streamline its internal democratic processes.
The council was attended by several prominent BNP leaders, including Mongla Municipality BNP Convener Md. Zulfikar Ali, Member Secretary Mahbubur Rahman Manik, Upazila BNP President A. Mannan Howlader, and General Secretary Abu Hossain Poni.
Md. Zulfiqar Ali, Convener of Mongla Municipality BNP, expressed satisfaction with the outcome, stating that the ward's BNP council concluded in a "festive atmosphere of campaigning and campaigning," with voters spontaneously forming their leadership of choice. He also indicated that the municipal BNP council will be held soon.
Kamrul Islam Gora, Joint Convener of Bagerhat District BNP and Convener of the Mongla-Rampal (Bagerhat-03 Parliamentary Constituency) Monitoring Committee, highlighted that the BNP's council activities in Mongla began in a democratic manner last January under the guidance of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman. He confirmed that all upazila committees have been formed, and councils for 8 out of 9 municipal wards have been completed, with Ward No. 6 being the final one after its previous disruption. Gora also mentioned that preparations for the larger municipal BNP council are underway for July 10, following discussions between the central and district BNP leadership.
