Rangamati, May 29 (V7N) — Five individuals, including a local leader of the ruling Awami League, have been arrested in a special operation conducted by police in Rangamati as part of an ongoing anti-crime drive titled “Operation Devil Hunt.” The initiative aims to suppress terrorism, improve law and order, and bring offenders under legal accountability.

Acting on a tip-off, police conducted a late-night raid on Wednesday in the Manikchhari area, leading to the arrest of Riton Barua, president of the Sapchari Union unit of the Awami League and a Union Parishad member. He was taken into custody by Kotwali police in connection with allegations currently under investigation.

In a separate operation in Rangamati municipality, four more individuals were detained on various charges. They are: – Md. Munna Hossain (47), son of Mohammad Hossain, resident of Ranga Pani, Ward 9 – Roni Barman (40), son of Ashwini Barman, from Sultanpur, Munshirghata, Ward 6, Rauzan, Chattogram – Md. Akhtaruzzaman (40), son of Abul Kalam, from Bonrupa Katta Pahar Lane, Ranga Pani, Ward 7 – Md. Ekram Hossain (42), son of Abul Bashar, from near the Manikchhari Army Checkpost, Kotwali-Rangamati

Kotwali Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge Md. Shahed Uddin confirmed the arrests and stated that the operation was carried out under the direct supervision of Superintendent of Police Dr. Farhad Hossain. The SP’s directive includes gathering intelligence and taking firm legal action against individuals involved in criminal activities to ensure public safety and maintain peace in the district.

He added that Wednesday’s operation led to the arrest of five individuals, including the Awami League leader, and that legal proceedings against them are currently underway. Further investigations are being conducted, and the police have affirmed their commitment to continuing such operations to ensure a safer Rangamati.
