Dhaka, Aug 18 (V7N) – Shahidul Islam Babul, general secretary of the Nationalist Farmers' Party, has been sent to jail after his bail application was rejected by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Saifuzzaman’s court on Monday. Babul had surrendered to the court through a lawyer and applied for bail on condition of appeal.

Babul was convicted in a case filed by Paltan Police Station on charges of obstructing government work and holding an illegal assembly. According to the case report, on October 31, 2017, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was traveling to Gulshan after a visit to Cox's Bazar. During that time, party leaders and activists allegedly raised anti-government slogans in the Paltan area and attempted to block the VIP road.

SI Mohammad Ibrahim Khalil of Paltan Model Police Station filed the case the same day. After investigation, SI Ataur Rahman submitted the charge sheet to the court on July 19, 2019. Following the completion of all proceedings, the court delivered its verdict on November 23, 2023.

In the verdict, Babul was sentenced to two and a half years of rigorous imprisonment under one section, along with a fine of Tk 2,000 and seven days in default. Under another section, he was sentenced to one year of rigorous imprisonment, a fine of Tk 2,000, and seven days in default.
