Mongla, Aug 26 (V7N) - A climate change and disaster preparedness fair was held in Mongla of Bagerhat on Tuesday to protect children from the impacts of climate change and promote youth leadership.
The day-long fair was organised by Jagrat Juba Sangha (JJS), a non-governmental development organisation, at the Upazila Parishad premises.
Mongla Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sharmin Akter Sumi inaugurated the fair as the chief guest.
Among others, former upazila vice-chairman and environmental activist Md Nur Alam Sheikh, Upazila Secondary Education Officer Moniruzzaman, Mongla Press Club President Ahsan Habib Hasan, Upazila Rural Development Officer Sabuj Bairagi, Upazila Rural Livelihoods Officer Md Anwar Hossain, Upazila Project Implementation Officer Md Matiur Rahman, Upazila Women’s Affairs Officer Ishrat Jahan, JJS Programme Manager Naba Kumar Saha, JJS official Homayra Tasnim and Chayan Mridha, president of the Upazila Climate Children’s Forum, attended the event.
Addressing the opening session, UNO Sharmin Akter Sumi said climate change could not be tackled without protecting the environment.
“Alongside protecting the Sundarbans, we must also protect nature and biodiversity,” she said, urging young people to prepare themselves as climate champions.
The fair featured a quiz competition, an art competition, demonstrations of disaster-resilient projects and a firefighting drill conducted by the Fire Service and Civil Defence.
The event concluded with the distribution of prizes among the winners of the various competitions.
