Dhaka, Nov 01 (V7N)- Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has urged opposition parties to join discussions of the Constitution Amendment Committee rather than organise long marches if they want further constitutional reforms, including the introduction of an upper house of parliament.

He said the government would amend the Constitution to strengthen state institutions and prevent a recurrence of the circumstances that led to the July Uprising.

The minister made the remarks at a seminar on the constitutional crisis and Baksal in post-independence Bangladesh at the July Uprising Memorial Museum on Saturday afternoon, October 31.

Salahuddin said the government was committed to meeting public expectations and ensuring that the country would not experience another situation similar to the July Uprising.

He called for constitutional amendments to prevent the concentration of power and ensure that an authoritarian state and government system could not emerge in the future.

The seminar’s discussions focused on constitutional crises and potential reforms in Bangladesh, including ways to strengthen democratic institutions.

Former interim government legal adviser Professor Asif Nazrul also spoke at the event, emphasising the need to establish a balance among parliament, the judiciary and constitutional institutions.

He warned against concentrating power in the hands of any single individual or institution, highlighting the importance of institutional checks and balances.
