Dhaka, Oct 18 (V7N)- Grameen Kalyan, founded by former chief adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus, has appealed to the Supreme Court against a High Court verdict directing it to pay Tk 666 crore in disputed taxes claimed by the National Board of Revenue (NBR).

The organisation’s lawyer filed the appeal with the relevant branch of the Supreme Court on Sunday, October 18.

Earlier, on October 10, the High Court published the full text of its verdict, delivered by a bench comprising Justice Mujibur Rahman Mia and Justice Rezaul Karim.

In the verdict, the court directed the NBR to issue a demand notice immediately to recover the outstanding Tk 666 crore in taxes.

The High Court observed that Grameen Kalyan could not claim tax payments deposited at source in the name of Grameen Telecom as its own tax payments. The verdict described the matter as a “classic example of tax evasion.”

Grameen Kalyan had previously filed a writ petition challenging the legality of the NBR’s tax claim. However, the High Court dismissed the petition on September 10, ruling against the organisation.

The appeal seeks to challenge that decision as the tax dispute moves to the next stage of judicial proceedings.
