Dhaka, July 27 (V7N) – The Election Commission (EC) has formally requested a meeting with the Speaker of the National Parliament as part of the process to announce the schedule for Bangladesh's upcoming presidential election.
According to an official letter sent to the Parliament Secretariat on Sunday (July 26), the EC has sought a discussion with the Speaker, although no date or time for the meeting has yet been fixed.
The letter, signed by EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed, states that President Md. Shahabuddin resigned from office on July 24. Under Article 123(2) of the Constitution, a presidential election must be held within 90 days of the office becoming vacant.
The letter also cites Sections 5(2) and 5(3) of the Presidential Election Act, 1991, which require the Election Commission, in consultation with the Speaker, to announce the election schedule through a notification published in the official gazette.
The EC has requested that the Speaker determine a convenient date and time for a meeting with the Chief Election Commissioner to facilitate the consultation process.
According to the letter, the Chief Election Commissioner will be accompanied by the Election Commissioners and the Senior Secretary of the Election Commission Secretariat during the meeting.
Deputy Secretary of the Election Commission Secretariat Mohammad Monir Hossain and the Chief Election Commissioner's Private Secretary Mohammad Ashraful Alam are also expected to attend as supporting officials.
The Election Commission said the meeting is intended to complete the constitutional and legal formalities required before announcing the schedule for the 2026 presidential election.
