Dhaka, Jul 24 (V7N)- President Md. Shahabuddin has resigned from the office of the President of Bangladesh, citing serious health complications.
According to official sources, the President submitted his signed resignation letter to Speaker of the National Parliament Hafiz Uddin Ahmed on Friday (July 24).
The Speaker is scheduled to formally announce the resignation at an emergency press conference to be held at 5:00 pm in the oath-taking room (East Block, Level-1) of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
Under Article 54 of the Constitution of Bangladesh, the Speaker of Parliament will discharge the functions of the President until a new President is elected if the office falls vacant.
Meanwhile, Article 123 of the Constitution provides that members of Parliament must elect a new President within 90 days of the office becoming vacant. As the majority party in Parliament, the BNP is expected to nominate its candidate for the presidency.
Earlier in the day, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed returned to Bangladesh after cutting short his personal visit to Thailand amid reports of the President's possible resignation.
Md. Shahabuddin was sworn in as the 22nd President of Bangladesh on April 24, 2023. His constitutional tenure was scheduled to continue until April 2028. He was elected during the Awami League government and later continued in office after the political transition that saw the interim government led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus and the elected government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman assume office.
