Dhaka, Aug 11 (V7N) – The Ministry of Food has approved the import of 500,000 metric tons of rice in the first phase, based on applications from interested traders.

On Sunday, the ministry announced that 242 importing companies across the country have been granted permission to bring in the rice. Of the approved quantity, 461,000 metric tons are parboiled rice, while the remaining 39,000 metric tons are white rice. Each importer is allowed to import between 500 and 20,000 metric tons.

Importers must ensure the rice reaches the domestic market by September 30. They have also been instructed to sell the rice in imported packaging and provide the district food controller with details of imports, storage facilities, and marketing arrangements.

The ministry says the move aims to stabilize supply and prices in the local market ahead of the upcoming festival season.
