Dhaka, Aug 07 (V7N) – The Office of the Chief Advisor has officially requested the Election Commission (EC) to organize national elections before Ramadan on February 26, 2026. The request was made through a formal letter sent on Wednesday (August 6), completing the government's procedural step toward initiating the election process.
According to a press release from the Press Wing of the Chief Advisor, the letter was sent by M Siraj Uddin Mia, Principal Secretary to the Chief Advisor, to the Senior Secretary of the Election Commission. The letter urges the EC to take necessary measures to ensure free, fair, peaceful, and festive elections on the proposed date.
The press release noted that Dr. Muhammad Yunus, in his televised address to the nation on Mass Uprising Day (July 5), announced that elections would be held before Ramadan in February. The letter sent today is a continuation of that announcement and fulfills the formal governmental procedure of conveying the decision to the Election Commission.
The Chief Advisor, through the letter, emphasized the importance of starting all preparations and institutional arrangements for the upcoming elections without delay. He also expressed a strong desire for the national elections to be a joyful and historic occasion, especially considering that many citizens had been deprived of voting rights for the past 15 years.
The letter further highlights the need for the appropriate use of technology in the election process to enhance transparency and efficiency. It reaffirms the interim government's commitment to ensuring the elections meet the expectations of fairness, participation, and peaceful conduct.
With this communication, the responsibility now shifts to the Election Commission, which is expected to begin formal preparations for what could be one of the most significant elections in the country’s recent history.
