Dhaka, July 07 (V7N) — Food Advisor Ali Imam Majumdar has refuted claims that rice prices have surged significantly during the peak season, stating that the increase has been “slight” and is under close government monitoring to prevent further escalation.
He made these remarks while speaking to journalists after a seminar on food safety held at Hotel Sonargaon in Dhaka on Monday.
“The allegation that rice prices have increased a lot is not entirely true. Prices have risen slightly, and we are monitoring the situation carefully,” Majumdar said, seeking to reassure the public amid concerns over rising costs of essential commodities.
Addressing food safety, the Food Advisor stressed its importance for protecting public health. He announced that Bangladesh will establish a modern food safety laboratory with Japanese assistance through a newly signed loan agreement. The main facility will be located in Dhaka.
In addition, Majumdar said that advanced food testing systems will be set up in Khulna and Chattogram. These facilities will function as part of the national reference laboratory of the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (BFSA), aiming to enhance the country’s capacity to ensure food quality and safety.
