Dhaka, May 04 (V7N) – The repatriation of the Rohingyas must be based on the assurance of security and rights, not coercion, said Foreign Affairs Advisor Towhid Hossain. He made these remarks at a seminar on the Rohingya issue held at the Bangladesh University of Professionals on Sunday (May 4).
“The Rohingyas must return to their homeland, but not by force,” said Hossain. “They will only go back if there is a guarantee of their safety. Bilateral talks with Myanmar alone will not bring about any meaningful outcome in this matter.”
He emphasized that the return of the Rohingyas hinges on two fundamental aspects: rights and security. “Without addressing these two issues, repatriation is unrealistic. We should not send them back to the very place they fled from in fear,” he said.
Towhid Hossain further stated that real changes must take place within Myanmar, and any assurance of such change must be recognized by the international community. “Yes, it is a complex and long-term process. It requires unity and cooperation from all stakeholders,” he added.
He concluded by stressing the need for a comprehensive and actionable roadmap to facilitate the safe and voluntary return of the Rohingya refugees.
