Chittagong, Oct 04 (V7N) – At least 15 people were injured when a speeding bus lost control and overturned inside the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel under the Karnaphuli River in Chittagong on Saturday afternoon.

The accident occurred around 1:35 pm, when the bus was traveling from the Patenga end of the tunnel toward Anwara, confirmed Golam Samdani Himel, Assistant Engineer (Toll and Traffic) of the tunnel authority.

He said the injured passengers were quickly taken to a nearby hospital by tunnel security vehicles and ambulances. “Fortunately, none of the passengers sustained serious injuries,” Himel added.

Following the accident, traffic movement inside the tunnel was temporarily suspended, but normal operations resumed after the overturned bus was removed.

This is one of the first recorded accidents inside the country’s first underwater tunnel, which officially opened to traffic in 2023.
