Dhaka, May 21 (V7N) — The death toll from the gas leak explosion in Dhaka’s Badda area has risen to three, as another victim succumbed to his injuries early Wednesday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Tofazzal Hossain (45), a resident of Dakshin Anandnagar under Badda Police Station. He died at around 5:30 AM while receiving treatment at the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in the capital.
Tofazzal’s wife and one of his daughters had earlier died from severe burns sustained in the same incident. Two other daughters remain hospitalized, and according to attending doctors, their condition is still critical.
Resident Surgeon Dr. Shaon Bin Rahman confirmed that Tofazzal had suffered burns over 80 percent of his body, reducing his chances of survival significantly.
The tragic explosion occurred at around 12:30 AM on Friday (May 16), reportedly due to a gas leak. All five members of the family were injured and rushed to the National Burn Institute in critical condition.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about residential gas safety in Dhaka, where similar accidents have occurred in the past due to undetected leaks or poor maintenance.
Authorities are yet to release a detailed report on the cause of the explosion.
