Bagerhat, Sept. 06 (V7N) — An anti-drug protest and public rally was held in Putikhali Union of Marolganj upazila in Bagerhat, with participants calling for collective efforts to prevent drug abuse and combat crime.
The programme was organised under the slogans, “We must prevent drugs together to save our families, society and country” and “The spread of drugs is visible; resistance is the solution.”
The Human Rights Council Foundation, Khulna Divisional Branch, organised separate public rallies against drugs, corruption and extortion at Buderhat Bazar and Shaheed Market areas on Saturday after Asr prayers.
The main rally was held on the premises of Minara Islamia Cadet Madrasa at Buderhat Bazar.
Mohammad Sohel Sheikh, Khulna Divisional Chief of the Human Rights Council Foundation, attended the rally as the chief guest.
The event was chaired by Mohammad Serajul Islam, general secretary of the foundation’s Khulna divisional branch.
Among those who addressed the gathering as special guests were Mohammad Harunur Rashid, vice-president of Putikhali Union BNP; Ali Azim Babul, senior joint convener of the upazila Jubo Dal; Tarikul Islam Russell, former vice-president of the Bagerhat District Chhatra Dal; and Maulana Nazir Ahmed, ameer of Putikhali Union Jamaat-e-Islami.
Representatives of various local social and political organisations also attended the programme.
Speakers said political parties in Putikhali Union had agreed to work together against drugs, terrorism and criminal activities from now on.
They said no person involved in the drug trade should be allowed to use a political identity or affiliation as a shield.
“Wherever there are drugs, there must be resistance,” the speakers said, urging local residents to unite against drug-related activities.
The organisers called for greater public awareness and collective action to protect families, communities and the wider society from the harmful effects of drugs.
