Sylhet, Nov 21 (V7N) – Abdur Rahman, 65, a local BNP leader and caretaker of Shah Sundor Mazhar, was fatally injured after being struck on the head with a brick during a street altercation in the Pirer Bazar area under Shah Paran Police Station. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening, and he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday morning while undergoing treatment at Osmani Hospital.
Abdur Rahman served as the vice president of Khadimpur Union BNP. Local sources reported that the dispute began after a disagreement with Sumon Ahmed, son of local Awami League supporter Sajjan Mia, over distributing sweets following last month’s verdict on former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Tensions had also arisen earlier regarding the distribution of leaflets for BNP candidate Khandakar Abdul Muktadir in Sylhet-1, as well as a court case concerning the management of the Shah Sundor Mazhar.
Eyewitnesses said the confrontation escalated when Abdur Rahman protested Sumon urinating on the roadside. In the ensuing argument, Abdur Rahman’s son allegedly struck Sumon, who then picked up a brick and hit Abdur Rahman on the head. Both were rushed to Osmani Hospital for treatment, where Abdur Rahman later died. Sumon reportedly fled the hospital after hearing of Abdur Rahman’s death.
Abdur Rahman’s funeral was held yesterday after Maghrib prayers at the Mazhar Mosque, followed by burial at the same location.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) Mohammad Saiful Islam confirmed both parties were admitted to Osmani Hospital following the incident. He stated that Abdur Rahman passed away on Thursday morning, and the suspect has since absconded. Shah Paran Police Station Officer-in-Charge Monir Hossain said investigations are ongoing, taking into account internal disputes and other factors, and efforts to apprehend the suspect continue.
