Rajshahi, July 13 (V7N) – In Rajshahi, farmers are gaining significant financial benefits by adopting the ‘Macha’ (trellis) method of vegetable farming during the rainy season. This technique prevents the vegetable vines and fruits from touching the ground, which reduces the risk of pests and diseases. Due to the elevated nature of the plants, the crops remain cleaner and are easier to harvest. The method has proven to be profitable as it yields high-quality vegetables that fetch better market prices.
The ‘Macha’ system is primarily used for growing creeping or vine vegetables such as bottle gourd (lau), ridge gourd (chichinga), pumpkin (kumra), cucumber (shosha), and beans (sim). In this method, the vines grow upwards on the trellis, leading to higher yields and less exposure to pests and diseases. It also saves space, making it a highly efficient farming technique.
In Rajshahi, several areas including Katakhali, Nowdapara, Belpukur, Horian, Bhatruapara, and others are witnessing significant growth in vegetable farming using this method. In these villages, various fields and even backyard gardens are being utilized for ‘Macha’ farming.
Mohsin Ali, a farmer from Purapukur, explains, "Farming vegetables on trellises reduces disease attacks, and these crops fetch a better price in the market."
Currently, approximately 15 hectares of land are being cultivated using the ‘Macha’ method in these areas, including fields by ponds, low-lying lands, and homesteads. The farming technique is not only practical but is also being recognized as a sustainable agricultural method, especially in areas prone to flooding or waterlogging.
Agricultural Extension Officer of Rajshahi, Sharmin Sultana, stated, “The trellis farming method is profitable and eco-friendly. It enhances productivity and promotes safe vegetable production. During the monsoon, crops are less likely to suffer damage, and the yield is substantial. It also requires less labor, making it a cost-effective farming technique.”
The increasing popularity of the ‘Macha’ method is contributing significantly to the financial independence of farmers, making it an attractive and effective agricultural practice for the future.
