Rajshahi, Sept 28 (V7N) – A boat carrying mourners capsized in the Padma River on Saturday morning, leaving one person dead and two others missing in Godagari upazila’s Premtoli area.
The deceased was identified as Jiten Mondal, 60, of Kathalbariya village. The missing men are Dilip, 32, of Faradpur village, and Horen Saha, 65, of Dumuria village.
According to locals, the incident occurred around 10:00 a.m. when about 20 to 25 relatives and neighbors were crossing the river to bury the body of Kanai Karmakar, 70, of Premtoli Palpara, who had passed away earlier that morning. The mourners were traveling by boat to the river’s mid-char area to perform the burial when strong currents overturned the vessel.
While most passengers managed to swim ashore, three went missing. Later, locals rescued Jiten Mondal and rushed him to Premtoli Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.
As of 11:30 a.m., efforts were still underway to trace the two missing men. Maksudur Rahman, officer-in-charge of the Premtoli Police Investigation Center, confirmed the death and said rescue operations were continuing.
