New Delhi, Oct 10 (V7N)- Delhi Police have detained Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) founder Abhijit Deepke and two other party leaders after they arrived at the capital's airport from Mumbai ahead of a planned protest demanding the resignation of India's Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
According to Hindustan Times, the three were detained on Saturday, October 10. The CJP identified the other two leaders as Saurabh Das and Ashutosh Ranka.
The CJP called for the demonstration at Jantar Mantar, demanding Kumar's immediate resignation over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process used to revise electoral rolls.
Security has been tightened across New Delhi to prevent protesters from gathering at the designated protest site. More than 40,000 personnel from Delhi Police and the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) have reportedly been deployed to maintain law and order.
Authorities have installed barricades and spike strips on key roads to restrict movement and monitor potential gatherings. Security personnel are conducting checks at several locations across the capital.
The airport detentions came after police earlier detained around 500 people who had arrived from different areas to participate in the protest, according to officials. Police said at least 50 of those detained had criminal records and that the action was taken as a precaution to maintain public order.
The CJP's planned demonstration has triggered extensive security measures and transport restrictions in the capital. The party maintains that its protest is intended to challenge the Election Commission over the voter-list revision process, while the allegations of irregularities have been denied by the authorities.
