Tehran, Sep 28 (V7N)- Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport remains operational despite new US sanctions targeting Iran’s aviation sector, according to the airport’s chief executive, Ramin Kashef-Azar.
Speaking to Iranian media, Kashef-Azar said the airport handled 60 flights on September 23, the day the latest sanctions took effect.
He added that regular international flights to more than 30 destinations have continued despite the new restrictions.
The US Treasury Department announced new sanctions against Iran’s aviation sector on September 8. The measures reportedly targeted 27 Iranian airlines that had not previously been subject to US sanctions.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also warned that airports and other institutions providing services such as aircraft fueling, landing assistance or ticket sales for Iranian airlines could face secondary sanctions.
Such measures could potentially restrict the affected institutions’ access to the US financial system.
The sanctions have nevertheless affected Iran’s international air connections. Oman and the United Arab Emirates have suspended flights involving Iranian airlines, while four airports in Iraq have also reportedly stopped handling Iranian flights.
Despite those disruptions, Iranian airlines continue to operate flights to several countries, including China and Russia.
As a result, Imam Khomeini International Airport has remained open to international traffic, although some routes and aviation services have been affected by the US sanctions.
