Ankara, Aug 08 (V7N) – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said that the trilateral defense agreement signed by Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan will contribute to regional security and efforts to combat terrorism.
The Turkish president made the remarks in a social media post, according to Anadolu Agency on Saturday (August 8).
Erdoğan said the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement is based on the principle of collective resistance and includes the right to self-defense as recognized under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.
He emphasized that the agreement is not directed against any particular country. According to Erdoğan, the pact remains open to the participation of other friendly countries with the aim of promoting peace, prosperity and stability in the region.
"Turkey will firmly maintain its principled position of resolving conflicts and crises through dialogue and diplomacy based on respect for international law," Erdoğan said.
He also expressed hope that the recent visit, discussions and agreement would contribute positively to the wider region.
The trilateral defense agreement was signed by Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan at a conference in Mecca on Friday (August 7).
Under the agreement, an armed attack against any one of the three countries will be treated as an attack against all three, establishing a framework for collective defense cooperation among the signatories.
