Washington, Jul 22 (V7N) – Former US Vice President Mike Pence has defended President Donald Trump's actions against Iran, saying the administration made the right decision to respond to what it sees as growing security threats posed by Tehran.
Speaking with CNN host Wolf Blitzer on The Situation Room, Pence said he supports the president's approach to the ongoing conflict.
"I believe President Trump made the right decision to take action against Iran," Pence said.
While acknowledging Trump's efforts to pursue a ceasefire, Pence questioned Iran's willingness to reach a peaceful settlement or take steps toward reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
"I understand the interest President Trump has shown in achieving a ceasefire, but I do not believe Iran is sincerely interested in a peaceful resolution," he said.
Pence's remarks come amid continued international concern over escalating tensions in the Middle East and Iran's nuclear program.
His comments echoed those made by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who told a meeting of Southeast Asian representatives in Manila, the Philippines, on Wednesday (July 22) that Washington remains open to negotiations but doubts Tehran's commitment to diplomacy.
Rubio said the United States seeks dialogue to reduce tensions and find a solution to the conflict.
"If they are sincere, we are sincere. But if they are not, we will do whatever is necessary to protect our interests and those of our allies," Rubio said.
Iran has repeatedly rejected US accusations that it is unwilling to negotiate in good faith, while criticizing continued US military operations and sanctions during diplomatic efforts. Tehran has maintained that Washington's actions undermine the prospects for meaningful negotiations.
The United States and Iran continue to exchange accusations as military tensions persist across the Middle East.
