Cox’s Bazar, Sep 28 (V7N)- Trial flight operations have begun from the newly constructed terminal building at Cox’s Bazar Airport, marking a new phase in the airport’s ongoing modernization.
A NovoAir flight carrying 70 passengers departed for Dhaka at 8:45am on Monday. Air Astra and US-Bangla Airlines subsequently operated flights from the airport at 8:50am.
The airport modernization project has been underway for several years with the aim of developing Cox’s Bazar, one of Bangladesh’s major tourist destinations, into an international aviation hub and supporting the growth of the tourism sector.
A key component of the project is the extension of the airport’s runway by 1,700 feet into the sea.
The modernization project began on August 29, 2021, with an estimated cost of Tk 1,868 crore.
Besides the new terminal building, the project includes the development and installation of modern aviation infrastructure at the airport.
The expanded runway is expected to improve the airport’s capacity to handle larger aircraft and support increased air connectivity.
Airport authorities have expressed hope that the newly extended runway will become fully operational by October.
The development is expected to strengthen air connectivity to Cox’s Bazar and support the government’s plans to expand tourism and aviation infrastructure in the region.
