Rajshahi, June 11 (V7N) — Railway communication between Rajshahi and the rest of the country came to a standstill on Wednesday morning as locals in Charghat upazila began protesting by blocking railway tracks, demanding the renovation of Nandan Gachi Railway Station.
The demonstration began early in the day, with protesters placing red flags on both sides of the station, effectively halting train operations. Among their demands are the immediate renovation of the dilapidated station infrastructure and the suspension of certain intercity train services until their concerns are addressed.
As a result of the blockade, several major trains, including the Sagardari Express heading to Khulna and the Madhumoti, Banalata, and Silk City Express bound for Dhaka, have been stranded, causing significant disruption to passengers.
The timing of the protest has intensified the suffering of hundreds of travelers, particularly those returning to work in Dhaka and other cities after the Eid holidays. Stranded passengers expressed frustration over the sudden halt in services, highlighting the lack of alternative arrangements or clear communication from railway authorities.
Protesters, however, remain steadfast in their position. They have warned that the blockade will continue indefinitely unless authorities meet their demands for immediate renovation work and improved station facilities.
Local administration and railway officials have yet to reach an agreement with the demonstrators as of the latest reports.
