Cox’s Bazar, July 30 (V7N) – A member of the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) was killed in a shooting at a Rohingya refugee camp in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar. Police have arrested two people in connection with the incident.
The deceased was identified as Mohammad Zubayer, 34, son of Rahmat Ullah and a resident of Block H-29 at Rohingya Camp-8 West.
According to the 14 Armed Police Battalion (APBn), unidentified assailants opened fire on Zubayer when he was on his way to a mosque from his home early Thursday morning.
APBn officials said the incident took place around 3:30am at Block H-29 under the Madhurchhara Iranian Pahar Police Camp area of Kutupalong. When Zubayer reached in front of a house belonging to a man named Ibrahim, several unidentified gunmen fired at least five shots at him, leaving him critically injured.
Local residents rescued him and were taking him to a medical centre at Camp-8 West when he succumbed to his injuries.
After receiving information, members of the APBn rushed to the spot, brought the situation under control and launched an operation to identify and arrest those involved. Two suspects have so far been detained, but their identities will be disclosed later in the interest of the investigation.
Commander of the 14 APBn, Additional Deputy Inspector General Mohammad Siraj Amin, confirmed the incident.
He said preliminary information suggested that the killing might have been linked to internal conflicts and divisions between ARSA and the Rohingya Solidarity Organisation (RSO). He added that investigators were also looking into the circumstances surrounding Zubayer’s presence at the location during the early morning hours.
Siraj Amin said efforts were underway to identify and arrest other individuals involved in the killing. The investigation is ongoing.
