New Delhi, Aug 25 (V7N)- Heavy rainfall and severe waterlogging have disrupted normal life in India's capital New Delhi, prompting authorities to issue a red alert amid deteriorating weather conditions.
Continuous rain and strong winds of around 30 to 40 kilometers per hour caused widespread waterlogging and severe traffic congestion across the city on Tuesday.
Major areas including Rajiv Chowk, IFFCO Chowk, Railway Road, Sector 5 and Old Delhi Road were among the worst affected. Long traffic queues were reported as roads became submerged in several areas.
Authorities have advised schools to conduct classes online, while many workplaces have been encouraged to adopt work-from-home arrangements in view of the adverse weather.
Air traffic was also disrupted at Delhi airport. At least 15 flights, including three international flights, were diverted because of the poor weather conditions. More than 250 aircraft reportedly faced delays in landing due to water accumulation on the runway.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast that thunderstorms, strong winds and heavy rainfall may continue in Delhi and surrounding areas for the next few days.
Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel as the adverse weather continues.
