Dhaka, Jul 24 (V7N)- Continuous rainfall has affected normal activities in kitchen markets across the country, with traders reporting fewer buyers despite keeping their shops open on Friday, a public holiday. However, the reduced customer presence has not brought any relief in prices.
Instead, vegetable prices have increased further over the past week, with traders citing supply shortages caused by heavy rains. Prices of various vegetables have risen by Tk 20 to Tk 30 per kilogram, putting additional pressure on consumers.
Among vegetables, green chili has reached the highest price level, with retailers selling it at around Tk 280 per kilogram.
Retailers have blamed wholesalers for the price hike, saying that the supply of vegetables has declined due to persistent rainfall, resulting in higher market prices.
The fish market has also seen a similar trend, as sellers are increasing prices citing adverse weather conditions, heavy rain and supply shortages. Within a week, prices of most river fish have increased by Tk 50 to Tk 100 per kilogram.
Heavy rainfall and flooding have affected fish production, causing a decline in supply. The price of hilsa has increased significantly, with one kilogram of the popular fish selling for more than Tk 3,500.
Meanwhile, onion prices have started rising after remaining stable for a long period. Retailers are charging around Tk 10 more per kilogram, with good quality local onions being sold at approximately Tk 55 per kilogram.
The prices of ginger and garlic, however, have remained unchanged in the market. Consumers have expressed frustration over the continued rise in essential food prices amid the ongoing rainy season.
