Savar, May 1, (V7N) — Jahangirnagar University has officially announced the election schedule for its Central Students’ Union (JUCSU), set to take place on July 31, 2025, marking the first such election in 32 years.
The announcement was made by JUCSU Chief Election Commissioner Professor Dr. Md. Moniruzzaman at approximately 12:45 AM on Wednesday. According to the schedule, voting will be held from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with ballot counting and result publication occurring later that same day.
Earlier, at a midnight press briefing in the Council Room of the university’s new administrative building, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan confirmed the election date. He stated that under Section 8(b) of the JUCSU constitution, both central and hall union elections will be conducted simultaneously on July 31.
The absence of JUCSU over the past three decades has left the university's highest policymaking body without direct student representation. As a result, students’ voices and demands have largely gone unheard.
“This election will finally restore students’ right to representation,” said the Vice-Chancellor. “Traditionally, five student representatives are elected to the Senate through JUCSU. Unfortunately, students have been deprived of this for many years.”
He further explained that the election date was finalized after a consultative meeting organized by the university’s Environment Council, attended by student organizations, political groups, and other campus stakeholders. The consensus, he said, was to hold elections in a peaceful and inclusive manner.
Election Timeline:
May 12: Publication of the draft voter list and draft code of conduct
May 21: Deadline to submit objections to the voter list and feedback on the code of conduct
June 30: Publication of the final voter list and finalized code of conduct
July 1–3: Nomination forms to be collected
July 7: Deadline for submission of nomination papers
July 9: Scrutiny of nomination papers and publication of the draft list of candidates
July 11: Last date to appeal nomination validity or rejection

July 15: Publication of the final list of candidates

Professor Moniruzzaman emphasized that the Election Commission is committed to ensuring a transparent, fair, and participatory electoral process.
The return of JUCSU marks a historic milestone for the university, signaling a renewed chapter of student participation in institutional governance.
