Habiganj, Oct 30 (V7N) — Authorities in Madhabpur upazila have proposed filing cases against 15 to 20 individuals, including six named persons, for illegal sand extraction from the Sonai River. The move aims to prevent damage to government resources and enforce environmental regulations.

According to sources, Md. Mojibur Rahman, Acting Union Land Assistant Officer of Mantala Union, submitted a complaint to Madhabpur Police Station on October 28, 2025. The complaint stated that the accused had been extracting sand from the Sonai River without government permission, causing harm to public property.

The six named individuals in the complaint are Md. Jahangir Mia, 45, son of the late Idris Ali from Kamla Nagar village; Md. Sohel Mia, 48, son of Md. Ashu Mia from Mongolpur village; Md. Shuvo Mia, 25, son of Md. Matu Mia from Kamla Nagar; Md. Majharul Islam, 25, son of Md. Asbab Uddin from Kamla Nagar; Md. Shakil Mia, 45, son of the late Sadek Mia from Sultanpur; and Roni Mia, 32, son of Titon Mia from Kalikapur. The complaint also includes 15 to 20 others allegedly involved in the illegal activity.

Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Mujibur Islam stated, “Illegal sand extraction from government rivers will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Authorities have been instructed to take legal action against those involved. Regular monitoring is ongoing, and anyone found participating in these activities will face legal consequences.”

Madhabpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Sahid Ulla confirmed receiving the complaint and said, “We are conducting a thorough investigation into the matter. If the allegations are verified, cases will be formally filed against the accused and appropriate legal action will be taken.”

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are taking necessary measures to prevent further illegal extraction and ensure accountability.
