Dhaka, Oct 13 (V7N)- Twelve former advisers to Bangladesh’s interim government have strongly condemned what they described as continued harassment, online propaganda, physical threats and targeted attacks against Professor Muhammad Yunus, the former chief adviser and Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
In a joint statement issued on Tuesday, October 13, the advisers expressed deep outrage over the incidents and warned against attempts to undermine the achievements of the interim government through intimidation and misinformation.
The statement said the government led by Yunus had made extensive efforts to rebuild the state after years of economic mismanagement, damage to democratic institutions and human rights violations. It also credited the administration with ending practices associated with the previous regime, including enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings.
According to the statement, power was subsequently transferred to an elected government following what the advisers described as free and fair general elections in February 2026.
The former advisers expressed regret that, despite the transfer of power, certain political actors and vested interests were allegedly continuing to spread misleading information and issue physical threats against Yunus.
They warned that such actions could undermine the achievements and public support associated with the interim administration while creating instability in the country.
The statement also stressed that the reform aspirations and dignity associated with the July student uprising, as well as the sacrifices made by young people, must not be undermined by intimidation, propaganda or personal threats.
The joint statement was signed by Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed, economist; Dr. M. Fauzul Kabir Khan, economist; C. R. Abrar, educationist; Dr. Asif Nazrul, professor in the Department of Law at Dhaka University; Adilur Rahman Khan, senior Supreme Court lawyer; retired Lieutenant General Jahangir Alam Chowdhury; retired Brigadier General Dr. Sakhawat Hossain; Farooq E Azam, Bir Pratik; Farida Akhtar, executive director of UBINIG; Sharmin Sonia Murshid, sociologist and CEO of Fresher; filmmaker Mustafa Sarwar Farooqi; and Syeda Rizwana Hassan, a Supreme Court lawyer.
The statement followed an incident on Monday in which a group of people allegedly attempted to harass Yunus at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, United States. According to the supplied account, people accompanying him quickly escorted him away from the scene.
