Dhaka, Jul 02 (V7N) — Speaker of the National Parliament of Bangladesh Hafiz Uddin Ahmed departed for Iran on Thursday morning to attend the funeral of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The Speaker left Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at 7:30 a.m. and is scheduled to return to Bangladesh on July 4 after attending the funeral ceremonies.
Ayatollah Khamenei, who was born on April 19, 1939, in Mashhad, northeastern Iran, was reported to have been killed on February 28, 2026, at the age of 86.
Khamenei was a key figure in the political transformation that followed the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran. He briefly served as the country's Minister of Defense in 1980 before becoming a supervisor of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) during the Iran-Iraq War. He later served as the President of Iran.
Following the death of Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989, Iran's Assembly of Experts elected Ayatollah Khamenei as the country's Supreme Leader, a position he held for more than three decades.
